We’ve heard it time and time again, that small business is the backbone of the U.S. and is continually on the rise.  Since Lori first opened OffiCenters in 1981 the number of small businesses in the U.S. has increased 49% and today accounts for 54% of all U.S. sales!  In a time when corporate American has been ‘downsizing’ the rate of small business and startups has grown greatly!

2013 Small Business Growth:

2013 was quite a year for small businesses in Minnesota. Secretary of State Mark Ritchie announced earlier this month that 58,260 new Minnesota businesses were filed in 2013. That’s the 3rd largest number of filings on record, following 2009 and 2012. The quarterly business filings are broken down here:

  • First Quarter (January–March): 15,746
  • Second Quarter (April–June): 15,314
  • Third Quarter (July–September): 13,484
  • Fourth Quarter (October–December): 13,716

The 2013 business filings represent a 17.5 percent increase from 10 years ago.

What this means for Minnesotans:

According to Secretary of State Ritchie this is great news for Minnesota!

“This is a positive signal of Minnesota’s continued economic growth and employment opportunities,” says Ritchie. “Our state has a healthy environment for business and we hope to see this growth continue in 2014.”

Let us break this down a little more. This is a good for Minnesota because new businesses help provide:

  • Economic Growth: New businesses help contribute to the local economy by bringing growth to our communities. In addition to this, small businesses provide employment opportunities that larger corporations may not.
  • Future Growth: As we all know small businesses don’t always stay small. Think of companies such as Cargill or Target. They too once started out as small businesses that grew into the major corporations they are today. Yet even while they continue to grow, their headquarters have remained in Minnesota where they started. Helping further stimulate our local economy.
  • Contributions: Many businesses also give back to their local schools and non-profit organizations, in addition to thier police and fire departments. These contributions are not only extremely important to the organizations but to the community, as well.
